Hong Kong Web3 Association
Established in 2022 as a registered non-profit company in Hong Kong (CR#3140633), Hong Kong Web3 Association Limited (formerly "NFT Association of Hong Kong Limited") runs the largest web3 community in Hong Kong, comprises of over 2000+ community members, enthusiasts and practitioners in the growing web3 ecosystem (“HKWeb3”).
What is Web3
Web3 is the collective name for the next evolution of the digital economy, which incorporates many of the emerging technologies we are using today. Not to be confused with Web 3.0 or the Semantic Web. Web 3.0 is an extension of the World Wide Web through standards developed by the World Wide Web Consortium, making network data machine-readable.

Web3 is expected to be organized as a series of interconnected networks, independent of any centralized authority, and based on blockchain technology. This enables decentralized finance, or DeFi, where trust lies in the technology underpinning the network rather than a central regulator. This also includes smart contracts built with blockchain code that cannot be changed, as well as digital assets and tokens such as cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, central bank digital currencies and non-fungible tokens.

However, Web3 is also used as an umbrella term to cover emerging technologies such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, virtual reality, and metaverse projects.

Hong Kong policy towards Web3 and digital assets
Hong Kong SAR Government (HKSAR) believes in the potential of Web3 and its underlying blockchain technology to fast-track innovation, to inspire new business models, and to make people’s everyday life better. In finance, trade, manufacturing, logistics and so many other areas, it is presenting boundless new possibilities.

In 2022, HKSAR issued a clear policy statement on developing virtual assets, setting out their commitment to the sustainable and responsible development of the sector. They are committed, in terms of both policies and resources, to nurturing a vibrant Web3 ecosystem in Hong Kong which will become an important driving force in the economic development.
